New Sports Medicine Program

A new Sports Medicine Clinic opened in Wallowa Memorial Hospital this past fall. Dr. Brad Stephens, recent Chief Medical Officer and Orthopedic surgeon at the U. S. Olympic Training Center in Lake Placid, New York has returned to Northeast Oregon to run the new Sports Medicine Clinic. Since September, 2007, patients have been able to receive advanced treatment and therapy.

The primary procedures performed by Dr. Stephens are knee and arthroscopic surgeries. Patients are able to get x-rays, MRI, undergo surgery if necessary, and then complete a physical therapy program to aid in their recovery, all in the Sports Medicine Clinic within the hospital. Dr. Stephens takes an active approach with his patients. "One of the keys to sports medicine is to keep people moving," Dr. Stephens says.

Patients with certain types of sports injuries no longer have to leave the area to receive treatment. By having a highly qualified orthopedic surgeon specializing in sports medicine on site, the District is better able to meet its mission to provide premier health care in a professional, personalized environment for the residents and visitors of Wallowa County.

Despite the name, the usefulness of sports medicine treatment goes beyond the needs of athletes. Residents recovering from an injury or illness benefit from the new clinic. In addition to Dr. Stephens, the physical therapy department is highly involved in your care. It is a team approach.

Dr. Stephens and the new Sports Medicine Clinic are a welcome addition to Wallowa Memorial Hospital.
